Princess Loulou, dam of our Champion Nashwa, has sadly passed away following an attack of colic at the age of 16.

The daughter of Pivotal has been an integral part of Imad Al Sagar’s Blue Diamond Stud since her purchase as a yearling from her breeders David and Trish Brown of Furnace Mill Stud. 

She was a quality racemare under the care of Roger Varian, for whom she won three races including the Listed Gillies Fillies’ Stakes at Doncaster. A tough performer, she was also stakes-placed on six occasions including when second in the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet and third in the Group 3 Lanwades Stud Stakes.

Princess Loulou passed down that quality and toughness to her progeny in abundance. Nashwa, her third foal (pictured bottom right), was a brilliant performer for Imad Al Sagar and John and Thady Gosden, capturing the Group 1 Prix de Diane and Group 1 Nassau Stakes during a glittering season at three and the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at four. The daughter of Frankel was also Group 1-placed on a further six occasions, notably when second in the Juddmonte International and third in the Oaks and Irish Champion Stakes.

Nashwa was followed by Nebras, a son of Dubawi, who won last year’s Listed Quebec Stakes for John and Thady Gosden. Now with Chad Brown, he ran second in the Listed Monmouth Stakes on his most recent start.

Princess Loulou was also the dam of Louganini, a multiple winner at home and abroad.

“It is a very sad day,” commented Imad Al Sagar. “Princess Loulou has been key to the development of Blue Diamond Stud, firstly as a talented racemare herself and latterly as a Classic producer as the dam of our Champion Nashwa. 

“With her wins in the Prix de Diane, Nassau and Falmouth Stakes, Nashwa gave us many memorable days on the track. She is now part of our broodmare band at the stud and has a very good Dubawi colt foal. We also have Princess Loulou’s last foal, a Dubawi filly, to look forward to.

“Princess Loulou will be greatly missed by us and all the team at the stud. She leaves behind an important legacy, and one that we are very proud to be part of.”

Princess Loulou leaves behind a yearling colt by Frankel, a full-brother to Nashwa named Nasheed, and a filly foal by Dubawi.
