Hotazhell another impressive BDS-bred 2yo winner

5 June 2024

Hot off the heels of Milford's impressive debut win at Hamilton, the Blue Diamond crop of 2021 continues to impress. On Wednesday, it was the turn of Hotazhell to shine, with the Too Darn Hot colt justifying cramped odds to oblige on his second start at the Curragh for owner Silverton Hill and trainer Jessica Harrington.

Hotazhell ran extremely well on his debut at Leopardstown when fourth in a hot maiden despite encountering trouble in running. He showed the benefit of that run on Wednesday, jumping alertly to assume a prominent position under Shane Foley before knuckling down well to run down the leader Mount Parnassus to win going away as the 5/4 favourite.

"He had a lovely run at Leopardstown," said Shane Foley. "He'd come from the breeze-ups and he didn't get knocked about that day. Gavin [Ryan, on Mount Parnassus] let his slip along and so I had something to aim at. He was a little green but he's definitely something to look forward to. He'll have no problem with a mile and is a smart horse going forward."

"He's a lovely horse," said Harrington. "We'll take our time with him, he's in the Railway Stakes but that's only six furlongs. He's won over seven and if we doing anything we'd go up.

"I know he's a Too Darn Hot but he finished off very strong. He's a really nice horse.

"Unless we went somewhere in France I'd almost sit and wait with him for the National Stakes, or something like that.

"He's a smashing horse. He's carrying the Pathfork colours, who was my first Group 1 winner."

Hotazhell was sold through our Tattersalls October Book 2 draft for 70,000gns to Eddie Linehan, who resold him for 200,000gns to current connections at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

From the second crop of Too Darn Hot, he is out of Azenzar, who carried our colours to victory in minor company, and a half-brother to our classy sprinter Rizg.
