Tough Euginio swoops to win G3 Darley Stakes
13 October 2018
Euginio capped a very productive season on Saturday with a much deserved breakthrough at Group level in the G3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket.
Highly tried throughout his career with Richard Hannon, the son of Fastnet Rock nearly always acquits himself well on the track – indeed, Saturday’s win was his sixth top four finish of the season and fifth win overall.
Euginio was given time to find his stride by Hayley Turner on this occasion and once the gap appeared, showed a fine change of gear to run down Forest Ranger and win a shade cosily by a neck. The pair pulled well clear of Gabr in third.
“They told me to be really cool on Euginio as he likes cover and he was as game as anything when the gaps came,” said Turner.
Euginio’s good season began over the same course and distance back in April when he ran third to today’s rival Forest Ranger in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes. Subsequently second in the Tapster Stakes at Goodwood, he ran a fantastic race at Royal Ascot when second in the Wolferton Handicap and most recently returned to winning ways in a competitive conditions race at Doncaster. As a result, he now boasts earnings of approximately £140,000.
Bred by Arkle Bloodstock, Euginio was purchased as a yearling by Tony Nerses for 155,000gns out of the Clare Castle Stud draft at the 2015 Tattersalls October Sale.
He is a half-brother to Listed winner Handassa and out of Starstone, a Diktat half-sister to top sprinters Pastoral Pursuits and Goodricke.
