Star mare Nashwa retired

23 October 2024

Our star racemare Nashwa has been retired to stud. The daughter of Frankel gave us some wonderful memories, winning three Group 1 races and almost £1.7 million in prize-money.

Always well-regarded by John and Thady Gosden, she ran out the easy winner of her maiden at Haydock Park before taking the Listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial at Newbury.

Nashwa found the 12 furlong trip of the Oaks beyond her at Epsom but in a show of class and resilience, bounced back just over two weeks later to take a thrilling renewal of the Prix de Diane at Chantilly under regular partner Hollie Doyle.

From there, Nashwa added to her Group 1 tally with in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and later went down only narrowly to Place Du Carrousel in the Prix de l'Opera on Arc day at Longchamp, despite facing the double burden of a wide draw and bad ground.

Nashwa was kept in training at four and following a pair of placed efforts in the Prix Corrida and Hopping Stakes, bounced back with an emphatic victory in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket - always travelling well under Hollie Doyle, the filly powered through the field before quickening clear to win easily by five lengths.

She later ran second to stablemate Mostahdaf in the Juddmonte International with the top 3yo Paddington back in third and then a closing third to Auguste Rodin in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Imad Al Sagar, said: "Imad has decided to retire Nashwa and she will be a great addition to the stud as she is a gorgeous example of a Frankel. She's a Classic winner and a three-time Group 1 winner and gave us some great days over the last three years.

"It was a huge day for Imad's Blue Diamond operation when she won the Prix de Diane in 2022. It was a really exciting day for everyone and she took us many great places in her career.

"Last year she showed her versatility by winning the Falmouth before fantastic placed efforts in the Juddmonte and the Irish Champion Stakes.

"She's now off to the paddocks and Imad is currently sorting out mating plans, which is one of those nice problems to have.

"She'll be a fantastic addition to Blue Diamond Stud, which currently has about 40 mares worldwide in total."

Hollie Doyle, who partnered Nashwa in all 18 of her starts, said: "Nashwa helped me to take my career to new heights by giving me my first Classic winner. She's a very special filly for Blue Diamond Stud and doesn't owe anyone anything. Hopefully she'll make a great broodmare."

The Blue Diamond broodmare band is also home to her dam Princess Loulou, whose 2yo son Nebras was the taking winner of his debut at Newmarket earlier this month.
