Stakes victory for BDS-bred Araminta
26 May 2023
Araminta, bred and raised by Blue Diamond Stud, turned in a brilliant performance to take the Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood on Friday.
The Henry Candy-trained filly made a striking winning debut last month at Newbury and having subsequently run a fine third on bad ground in the Listed EBF Conqueror Stakes, was well fancied to break through in stakes level on Friday. She didn't disappoint, weaving her way through horses under Trevor Whelan to take up the running a furlong out and win going away from Understated.
Araminta races for Andrew Stone's St Albans Bloodstock, Alex Frost and Alex Acloque, and the trio now have to decide whether to supplement the filly for the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.
"It's a stiff mile here and she ran a very good race when third last time," said co-owner Alex Frost. "Very rarely do fillies go on such extremes of ground, which bodes well for the future. She hit the line hard and Trevor couldn't pull her up, so that's encouraging.
"We've always wanted a filly together but you never dream of this kind of stuff happening. It's exciting. She hadn't even run five weeks ago, and now mentioning Royal Ascot is a bit surreal."
Henry Candy added: "I haven't done a lot with her - she's quite a lady! But early on she was showing plenty of speed and I'm pleasantly surprised that she can stay as well. Trevor did say that he had a hell of a job pulling her up! There could be plenty more to come as she's a lovely big filly with scope."
Araminta is sadly the final foal out of Mince, who was purchased by the stud out of the Waddesdon Stud dispersal in 2019.
Mince (pictured left) was a high-class filly for Lady Rothschild and Roger Charlton whose career highlight came when successful in the Group 3 Bengough Stakes at Ascot. Overall, this tough daughter of Medicean won eight races, including the Listed Garrowby, Flying Fillies and Boadicea Stakes. Following her three-year-old season, she was rated the Champion 3yo Sprinter in Europe.
Mince was one of several winners out of Strut, another talented sprinter who won the Listed St. Hugh's Stakes. It is one of Lady Rothschild's original families that goes back to the Listed-placed Bay Bay.
Araminta was a 82,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 purchase by Blandford Bloodstock.
