Crack sprinter Sayif defeats the older horses in the Diadem Stakes

Sayif colt Sayesse made it two from three on Thursday when bravely fending off Mutoondresdashorse in the novice stakes at Newmarket.

Giving two pounds to the runner-up, Sayesse took the running up a furlong out and always had the measure of his rival to score by a head. The pair pulled two-and-a-half lengths clear.

“Luke drew upsides me but I always felt Sayesse is a horse who travels well,” jockey George Baker told The Racing Post. “He was just going through the motions but when I gave him a couple of flicks, he´s knuckled down well and put his experience to good use. He´s a very well built horse, tough and very straightforward. I suppose they´ll have to step him up a bit now but he´s one of those horses who just keeps doing enough.”

Sayesse was bred by Llety Farms, where Sayif stands for £3,000, out of the winning Eagle Eyed mare Pesse, a half-sister to Racing Post Trophy hero Kingsbarns. He was purchased as a yearling by Gill Richardson.

Sayif’s first crop also includes recent scorer King Of Castilla as well as the promising Gulliver.

Sayif: has two winners so far from his first crop

Sayif was a high-class two-year-old and sprinter who was placed four times at Group level as a two-year-old, notably when second in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and Group 2 July Stakes. He trained on to win the Group 2 Diadem Stakes at Ascot by 2 1/2 lengths as a three-year-old, in which he beat a field of top older sprinters.

A member of the increasingly powerful Green Desert sire line, Sayif was well supported in his first season by Blue Diamond Stud, who sent him the half-sisters to Group 1 performers such as Crowded House, Equiano, Kingsgate Native and Rob Roy. The resulting foals are now in training with the likes of Marco Botti, Hugo Palmer, Michael Bell and Johnny Murtagh.
