Lot 260: Sayif x Lough Mewin

Catalogued to the upcoming Goffs Orby Sale is this attractive first-crop daughter of Sayif from Oak Lodge & Springfield House Studs.

Bred by Reddy and Linda Coffey, the filly is a half-sister to the high-class Queen Of The Sand, whose eight wins include this year’s Grade 3 Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita. Queen Of The Sand also ran second in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes.

Their dam, the Woodman mare Lough Mewin, has also bred the Listed-placed Rydan from just three foals of racing age.

Lough Mewin is a half-sister to Listed winners White Gulch and Bodyguard and a descendant of the blue hen Thong via Group 2 winner Lisadell, a sister to Thatch who bred top two-year-old Fatherland.

Described by Linda Coffey as an ‘athletic, scopey filly’, she is catalogued to the second day of the sale as Lot 260.

Sayif was a high-class two-year-old and sprinter who was placed four times at Group level as a two-year-old, notably when second in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and Group 2 July Stakes. He trained on to win the Group 2 Diadem Stakes at Ascot by 2 1/2 lengths as a three-year-old, in which he beat a field of top older sprinters.

“Sayif was a high-class colt, as he proved when the easy winner of the Diadem Stakes,” said Tony Nerses. “He was also consistently among the best as a two-year-old.

“We have 12 Sayif yearlings of our own and there’s no doubt that Sayif – himself a typical representative of the Green Desert line – is passing on his strength and balance. He is throwing stock in his precocious mould, so we look forward to the first Sayifs running next year.”

A member of the increasingly powerful Green Desert sire line, Sayif was well supported in his first season by Blue Diamond Stud, who sent him the half-sisters to Group 1 performers such as Crowded House, Equiano, Kingsgate Native and Rob Roy.
