Rizg impressive in debut victory

Rizg lived up to expectations in fine style on Thursday with an impressive debut success for Roger Varian at Yarmouth.
Long held in high regard, Rizg looked to face a stern test against the Windsor Castle Stakes runner-up Dig Two, and the son of No Nay Never was also initially green, being slowly into stride before sitting up just off the leaders. However, when Hollie Doyle shook him up heading into the final two furlongs, he showed a bright turn of foot to quicken through horses and overcome Dig Two to win going away.
“I was really pleased with that,” said Hollie Doyle. “He’s a horse we’ve always liked. I’ve sat on him plenty at home and he’s always shown us the right signs. It’s a big relief for him to be able translate that today.
“Physically he’s all there at the moment but mentally, he’s still a big baby. I’m very pleased for connections as he’s a horse that we’ve been excited to run.
“The way he travelled and the way he picked up makes me think he’s a classy performer.”
Rizg holds an early entry in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.
Making Rizg‘s debut win particularly rewarding is the fact he is out of Blue Diamond homebred Azenzar. The daughter of Danehill Dancer, a relation to champion Alexander Goldrun, was also a winner for Roger Varian and is also the dam of the classy Establish, a two-time winner in Britain who has since gone on to race with success as Flagship Glory in Hong Kong.
Azenzar also has a colt foal by U S Navy Flag and visited Too Darn Hot this year.
