Classy Patentar got back to winning ways on Sunday with an easy success on the turf at Del Mar. The son of Teofilo stalked the pace under Flavien Prat and quickened clear when asked to win going away by two-and-quarter lengths from Little Scotty.

It was the fifth win and second of the year for Patentar, who now boasts $203,062 in earnings.

Bought by Tony Nerses as a yearling from breeder Whatton Manor Stud, Patentar was initially trained by Marco Botti for whom he won a conditions race at Lingfield and his juvenile debut at York. He also ran fourth to Toormore in the Craven Stakes.

Since then, Patentar has had a successful campaign in California under the care of Simon Callaghan, winning a tough Santa Anita allowance over former Canadian Horse of the Year Up With The Birds back in April and running second in last year’s Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Handicap.

Patentar was bred by Peter Player out of Poppets Sweetlove, a winning Foxhound half-sister to the Budapest bullet Overdose.
