Improving Extra Elusive captures the Winter Hill
29 August 2020
Hollie Doyle’s burgeoning partnership with Extra Elusive continued in great style on Saturday as our newly retained jockey steered the homebred to victory in the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor.
It was the second Group 3 win on the bounce for Extra Elusive following his brave winning performance for Doyle in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock Park. It was his fifth win overall.
Again allowed to use his stride by Doyle, Extra Elusive settled in second as Sky Defender took them along up front. Doyle was able to bag the far rail once they turned into the straight and Extra Elusive lengthened when asked to take up the running and hold the final challenger, Fox Chairman, at bay for a length score.
Celebrating an 899-1 four-timer, Doyle told At The Races: “I’m really blessed to get the leg up on these types of horses – good horses. Extra Elusive settled so well today, taking a lead. We went a nice even gallop and he got into a nice, beautiful rhythm. It’s probably not his track or ground, but he’s on the up.
“I just go with him and let him take me along and it worked out well today. He’s got bags of ability and physically he’s beautiful. I think he’d stay 12 furlongs if he kept on relaxing.“
Roger Charlton added: “It wouldn’t be his choice of ground or choice of tracks, but he did it well and I think it’s the best performance Extra Elusive has put up. I don’t think there’s anywhere to go next – that’s the problem. I think the owner is keen to run in the Saudi Cup. I think he’s a fun horse and you’ve got to be adventurous with them.”
Extra Elusive was bred by Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar out of Nessina, who was purchased to join the stud by Tony Nerses in 2012. The daughter of Hennessy, who is related to the likes of Logician, Cityscape, Bated Breath and Redoute’s Choice, was bought in foal to Invincible Spirit and the resulting foal turned out to be our Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Ajaya.
Nessina is also the dam of Lady Rasha, who is now part of the broodmare band at Blue Diamond Stud, while her two-year-old filly by Fastnet Rock, Mariam, is in training with Roger Varian. Nessina also has a yearling colt by Siyouni catalogued to the Tattersalls October Sale and a filly foal by Invincible Spirit.
