Impressive Newbury debut success for Araminta

21 April 2023

Araminta, bred by and raised at Blue Diamond Stud, made the perfect start to her career with a taking win in the second division of the Bridget maiden at Newbury for Henry Candy on Friday.

The daughter of Gleneagles was bred by Blue Diamond out of the high-class sprinter Mince and certainly looks to have inherited a fair amount of her dam's ability judging by the smooth manner in which she made up ground from the rear of the field having been slowly away. Once popped the question by Dane O'Neill, she quickened clear to win by a widening three-and-a-half lengths from the pacesetter Kokomo.

"We think Araminta is okay but our expectations were low," said part-owner Alex Frost. "Her mum won a Group 3 on soft, so we had some hope, but she's by Gleneagles and has a very good action. I don't know what we'll do as we didn't think beyond today. Her mum was a proper Group filly so the ambition would be some black type and maybe she'll get a mile."

Araminta is sadly the final foal out of Mince, who was purchased by the stud out of the Waddesdon Stud dispersal in 2019.

Mince was a high-class filly for Lady Rothschild and Roger Charlton whose career highlight came when successful in the Group 3 Bengough Stakes at Ascot. Overall, this tough daughter of Medicean won eight races, including the Listed Garrowby, Flying Fillies and Boadicea Stakes. Following her three-year-old season, she was rated the Champion 3yo Sprinter in Europe.

Mince was one of several winners out of Strut, another talented sprinter who won the Listed St. Hugh's Stakes. It is one of Lady Rothschild's original families that goes back to the Listed-placed Bay Bay.

Araminta was a 82,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 purchase by Blandford Bloodstock.
