Sayif: off the mark with easy winner Sayesse

Sayesse ran out the impressive winner of the two-year-old novice stakes at Brighton on Tuesday to become the first winner for our stallion Sayif.

The Mick Channon-trained colt was held up in the early stages of the 6f contest and came with a sweeping run to lead two furlongs out. Ridden out by Charles Bishop, he strode clear to score by three and three-quarters of a length.

“He livens up on the track so he can train himself on the track,” assistant trainer Michael Channon told the Racing Post. “We thought he was a 6-7f horse but Ididn´t think he could win like that, showing that pace and turning the form round with the favourite like that.”

Sayesse was bred by Llety Farms, where Sayif stands for £3,000, out of the winning Eagle Eyed mare Pesse, a half-sister to Racing Post Trophy hero Kingsbarns. He was purchased as a yearling by Gill Richardson.

Sayif was a high-class two-year-old and sprinter who was placed four times at Group level as a two-year-old, notably when second in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and Group 2 July Stakes. He trained on to win the Group 2 Diadem Stakes at Ascot by 2 1/2 lengths as a three-year-old, in which he beat a field of top older sprinters.

A member of the increasingly powerful Green Desert sire line, Sayif was well supported in his first season by Blue Diamond Stud, who sent him the half-sisters to Group 1 performers such as Crowded House, Equiano, Kingsgate Native and Rob Roy. The resulting foals are now in training with the likes of Marco Botti, Hugo Palmer, Michael Bell and Johnny Murtagh.
