The stud career of Tisa River got off to the best possible start on Tuesday when her first foal, Bolt Action, ran out the impressive winner of his debut for Roger Varian at Leicester.

The Kessaar colt had turned heads at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up in Doncaster when sold to Oliver St Lawrence, acting on behalf of Victorious Racing Ltd and Fawzi Nass, and didn’t disappoint on Tuesday, winning well by four lengths from the experienced New Definition despite suffering trouble in running.

“He was very impressive,” said jockey David Egan. “He was very professional beforehand and hacked to post. He would have learnt a lot today. He was put back into a pocket around halfway and I held on to him a bit but I was impressed because when I did take him back and to the outside, he took me there easily and it was just a matter of keeping him up to his work to the line. It could have been a lot smoother but to get the job done like that with how things unfolded was mightily impressive.

“I think all top-class horses are able to quicken into their races and have that second burst – when horses can quicken twice, you know have a good one.”

He added: “Mr Tate’s horse [New Definition] had good form and Mr Fahey’s [Sipahsalar] was an expensive breeze-up horse, so looking at the race on paper and going out to the paddock, there was a lot of talk about the race, and which ever horse won would go to Ascot with a live chance. And I think this lad proved that – Ascot is definitely on the cards.”

Tisa River was purchased to join Blue Diamond Stud for 400,000gns at the 2020 Tattersalls December Sale. By Equiano, she boasts an illustrious female family as a daughter of blue hen Senta’s Dream; as such, she is a half-sister to the Group/Grade 1 winners Iridessa, a champion whose five victories included the Fillies’ Mile, Pretty Polly Stakes, Matron Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, fellow champion Order Of Australia, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and Santa Barbara, winner of the Belmont Oaks and Beverly D Stakes.

Her granddam Starine won the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf for Bobby Frankel.

Bolt Action was bred by Mohammed Al-Qatami and Khalid Al-Mudhaf and is the first foal out of Tisa River. The mare also has a yearling filly from the first crop of Blue Point and is in foal to Frankel.
