Homebred Martineo stepped up on a promising debut at Kempton Park to break his maiden in cosy fashion at Wolverhampton on Thursday.
However, there was much more to his breakthrough victory than the actual race, which consisted of Andrea Atzeni pushing the Declaration Of War colt – named after Martin Stevens of the Racing Post – out to score under hands and heels.
Martineo was one of a number of runners who were stranded in the stalls as fruitless attempts were made to catch the wayward Cashel. With Cashel successfully evading all efforts of capture, Martineo was forced to remain in the stalls for a lengthy period of time, and it is a testament to his laid back nature that he seemingly never turned a hair.

Trained by William Haggas, Martineo is the second foal out of Woodland Scene, who joined Blue Diamond Stud when purchased by Tony Nerses for 70,000gns at the 2012 Tattersalls December Sale.
Woodland Scene, by Act One, is a half-sister to the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House, now at stud in Australia, as well as Listed winner On Reflection. Another half-sister, Argent Du Bois, is the dam of Grade 1 winner Ticker Tape.
Further back, it is the family of none other than Storm Cat.
Woodland Scene has a yearling colt by Mastercraftsman and recently foaled a colt by our Gimcrack Stakes winner Ajaya. She is set to return to Declaration Of War this season.
