Homebred Burhan wins easily at Deauville

20 August 2024

Homebred Burhan contributed to an excellent week for our two-year-old division when the easy winner of the 6f maiden at Deauville on Tuesday.

Fourth on his debut several weeks ago, the son of Siyouni showed the benefit of that run under Mickael Barzalona, always travelling well before showing a fair turn of foot to put matters to bed and win by a length from Ironico.

Our second juvenile winner in the past week after Nancy J, who scored for Jessica Harrington at Gowran Park, Burhan is our first runner and winner with champion French trainer Andre Fabre.

Burhan (pictured with Imad Alsagar shortly after being born in March 2022) is the first living foal out of Jousi, another Blue Diamond homebred who won in our colours at Ascot as a two-year-old. A Dubawi daughter of Listed winner Soon, Jousi is now at Stonereath Farm in Kentucky where she is in foal to Blame.

“I think he was quite immature on his debut, he didn’t come out of his stall well," said Teddy Grimthorpe. "It was like a first day at school and he didn’t understand everything. Today, he was more professional although he seemed fresh at the start of the race. He travelled well and won in a great action. Burhan was able to get out of the difficult ground. He is a Siyouni, which are quite versatile. This is Imad Alsagar’s first victory with a colt trained in France. We are therefore delighted!”

Burhan also pays a tribute to the late and much-missed Valdi de Souza (pictured riding him at Newmarket). The colt was pre-trained at Grove Stud where Valdi, who passed away last month, played a key role in his development.

Burhan joins an impressive list of winning two-year-old graduates hailing this season from Blue Diamond Stud that also include Group 3 scorer Hotazhell and debut maiden winners Milford and Sashay Away.
