Homebred Aljazzi runs second in Duke Of Cambridge

A run in the Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes could be on the cards for homebred Aljazzi following her excellent second in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. Her run came on the same card that fellow homebred Decorated Knight ran a brave second in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

Held up at the back of the field by Adam Kirby, Aljazzi made good headway through the field to get within a three-quarters of a length of the winner Qemah – last year’s Coronation Stakes heroine.

“I am delighted. I actually thought dropping back to a mile would be her best trip,” said trainer Marco Botti. “She likes the ground and she tries very hard.

“It’s great that she’s got some black type. We try to achieve as much black type as we can so we might aim for something in America, like the [Grade One] Beverley D Stakes (Arlington Park) in August.

“She wants a bit of time between races and she obviously had a hard race today so we aren’t in a rush to do anything.”

Successful in the Listed Snowdrop Stakes at Kempton earlier in the year, Aljazzi represents two generations of Blue Diamond breeding as the first foal out of Nouriya, another stud homebred who carried our colours to victory in the Listed John Musker Stakes and Listed EBF Lyric Stakes.

In turn, Nouriya, by Danehill Dancer, is a half-sister to the Listed-placed Lady Nouf, also a member of the Blue Diamond band, and Balmoral Handicap winner Yuften, who also finished second past the post in the Prix Jean Prat.
