'He has a big future' - Wonderful Justice breaks through in Black Gold Stakes
5 March 2023
Wonderful Justice, our homebred son of Justify, continued his rapid rise through the ranks on Saturday when successful in the Black Gold Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Making his return following an impressive winning debut at the same track for Brad Cox, Wonderful Justice assumed a prominent position under Colby Hernandez and once unleashed, had enough in reserve to run down the leader and hold off the challenge of Myredwhiteandblue with Grade 2 winner Andthewinneris back in fourth.
His success provides a great start to the stud career of his dam I'm Wonderful. The Giant's Causeway mare was bought by the stud as a yearling and boasts excellent American connections as a full-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Carpe Diem. She is also a half-sister to the Grade 1-winning two-year-old J B's Thunder and Grade 2 scorer Farrell as well as the high-class British sprinter Doncaster Rover.
“Perfect trip,” Hernandez said. “He broke sharp and sat stalking the 1 horse (Reckoning Force), and then he kicked on. Brad (Cox) did a great job with this horse."
Brad Cox was similarly impressed. “He improved in his second start,” he said. “He's a beautiful horse and I think he’s got a big future. He’s been improving and developing a lot mentally. I thank the ownership group for giving us an opportunity with him. He has the pedigree for stretching beyond one mile and a sixteenth. There’s plenty of opportunity on the Kentucky circuit and the NYRA circuit and I think he’ll be competitive at the top of that division.”
Wonderful Justice, who is from the first crop of American Triple Crown hero Justify, is the first foal out of his dam. I'm Wonderful also has a two-year-old colt by Dubawi who was sold for 625,000gns to Godolphin at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale and a yearling filly by Curlin. She currently resides in Kentucky and was recently scanned in foal to Blame.
