Gwafa: progressing fast over hurdles
Gwafa continued his exciting progression over jumps for Paul Webber on Thursday when the easy winner of a novices’ hurdle at Huntingdon, his second consecutive victory from just three starts.
Saddled with a penalty of five pounds for his recent Fakenham success, Gwafa made light of the impost to score under wraps by six lengths from Blue Rambler, a French Listed winner on the Flat who was sent off the 8/11 favourite for John Ferguson.
“Gwafa is a nice type and he´s improved with every run,” jockey Richie McLernon told the Racing Post. “I was very happy with the way he travelled and the way he jumped. I liked the way his head was too, because he can be a bit of character but he´s really listening to you now.”
Gwafa was a smart handicapper for Marco Botti who won his maiden at Newmarket by no less than 19 lengths before running second in a pair of classy handicaps at Haydock and Ascot.
Subsequently sent to Paul Webber, Gwafa shaped well on his hurdling debut at Kempton last month when sixth off a long absence behind Altior in a competitive novice hurdle. He later shed his maiden tag over hurdles with an easy success at Fakenham.
Gwafa was a 60,000gns Tattersalls December foal purchase by Tony Nerses in 2011. The son of Tamayuz was bred by Kenilworth House Stud and is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Marjalina as well as classy hurdler Australia Day.
Gwafa is one of three jumpers we have in training with Paul Webber alongside Idder and My Judge.
