Deserved success for Zgharta
2 May 2025
Having shown plenty of promise in two previous starts, Zgharta gained a deserved success on Friday when successful in the 1m2f novice at Newmarket.
Partnered by Hollie Doyle, the daughter of Ghaiyyath made smooth headway to hit the front over a furlong out before showing great battling qualities to fend off the runner-up Pearla.
"Lovely filly," said trainer Andrew Balding. "She ran a fine race at the Craven meeting [when second]. I don't think 1m2f necessarily suited her [today] but she got the job done. She's more relaxed at home since her last run so hopefully we'll lose the hood next time.
"It could be that she is a Sandringham Handicap filly - a stiff mile, strongly run race should suit her, so we'll probably look at that."
Zgharta joined Blue Diamond Stud when bought at the Goffs Orby Sale. She was bred by The Broadway Partnership out of Broadway Duchess, a Listed-placed daughter of New Approach who has already bred the stakes-placed Dukebox.
Also at Newmarket, homebred Nebras ran a fine race to be second in the Listed Newmarket Stakes. In the process, the Dubawi colt became the second black-type runner out of his dam Princess Loulou; the other is our multiple Group 1 star Nashwa.
