Classic hopes for Mangoustine; Zoustar half-brother to Tatts October

Group 1 targets beckon for Mangoustine, the current two-year-old out of Blue Diamond Stud’s Zotilla, following her brilliant success in the Listed Criterium de Lyon at Lyon Parilly on Thursday.

Impressive when scoring on debut at Deauville last month, the daughter of Dark Angel justified those high hopes held of her with a smooth success over the experienced colt Toimy Son.

“Her victory was very beautiful,” trainer Frederic Rossi told Equidia of the filly, who carries the colours of French basketball legend Tony Parker and Ecurie des Monceaux etc al. “I’ve said for a while she is a very good filly and today she confirmed it. Winning a Listed on her second outing is great for the future.

“I have won this event before and it has always served as a springboard for the Reservoirs. So I think that if the ground doesn’t get too heavier at the end of the year, she will go on this race.

“New year, Mangoustine is a filly for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.”

JDG noted that the winner covered the final 200 metres in 11’13, a better time than any three-year-old in the Listed Prix Coronation on Wednesday at Saint-Cloud over the same distance.

Jockey Christophe Soumillon added: “It’s great what she does. Two races and two wins. In addition, in the second race, we lacked a bit of experience against good horses. It was a good race.

“Turning in, I was going better than everyone else but I didn’t want to take the advantage too soon because in Deauville she had relaxed a bit in front. When I asked her, she accelerated very hard. She is a very good filly.”

Mangoustine is out of BDS’ Zotilla, a daughter of Zamindar purchased by Tony Nerses at the 2019 Arqana December Sale. Zotilla is a granddaughter of the highly successful producer Flanders via her Grade 3-winning daughter Louvain, making her a half-sister to the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Flotilla.

Zotilla’s yearling colt by Zoustar is catalogued to Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Sale. The mare visited Too Darn Hot this year.
