Cartier Champion three-year-old colt Authorized, made his racing debut in the autumn of his two-year-old season when third in the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes at Newbury. It was a run full of promise and prompted his trainer, Peter Chapple-Hyam, to pitch him straight into Group 1 company in the Racing Post Trophy (run at Newbury that year).
It was a bold move given that this was to be only Authorized’s second start, but he justified his trainer’s belief by breaking his maiden in impressive style under jockey Frankie Dettori.
He was immediately made one of the winter favourites for the Derby, and confirmed the following May that he was the colt to beat when sauntering home in the Group 2 Dante Stakes.
Could Authorized provide Frankie Dettori with a first Derby victory? The answer was an emphatic yes. Held up at the rear, Authorized swept down the outside of the field to take up the running a furlong out before storming clear to win by five lengths.
Authorized ran a close second to Notnowcato in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes on his next start, then took revenge on his Sandown conqueror by winning the Group 1 Juddmonte International with top Ballydoyle colts Dylan Thomas and Duke Of Marmalade also in arrears.
Authorized was retired to Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and later stood under the Darley banner in France before switching to Turkey. He has proven to be a high-class stallion under both codes, siring Group 1 winners such as Santiago (now at stud for Coolmore in Ireland), Seal Of Approval, Ambivalent and Complacent (now at stud in France) on the Flat and the hugely popular Grand National hero Tiger Roll over jumps.
In late 2023, it was announced that Authorized would once again be available to British and Irish jumps breeders, this time at Capital Stud in Ireland.
