Aljazzi is one in a million

OUR wonderful homebred Aljazzi earned her place in Tattersalls history on Wednesday when selling for a sale record of a million guineas at the Autumn Horses in Training Sale.

While it was sad to see Aljazzi leave Blue Diamond Stud, we were thrilled to see her join Newsells Park Stud. Many thanks also to the underbidder, Trevor Harris of Lordship Stud.

The daughter of Shamardal provided us with a momentous day at Royal Ascot this year when the brilliant winner of the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes. Things have not played to her advantage since then – she didn’t enjoy the ground for either the Prix Rothschild or Sun Chariot Stakes – and we are in no doubt that on her day, Aljazzi was a legitimate Group 1 filly.

“She was the only horse I was interested in here,” said Julian Dollar of Newsells Park Stud. “It’s quite unusual to see a filly of her calibre here in the Autumn Sale but then she stood out.

“Obviously she was a very good racemare and she had plenty of speed. And she’s by a very exciting broodmare sire in Shamardal from a good back family. I didn’t think that we would actually get her so I’m delighted we did, and I delighted that the boss was so determined.

“I’m not sure which stallion she’ll go to – we’ll sit down and think about it but there are a lot of options out there for her.”

Aljazzi represents two generations of Blue Diamond breeding as a daughter of Nouriya, another stud homebred who carried our colours to victory in the Listed John Musker Stakes and Listed EBF Lyric Stakes.

She was also highly progressive for Marco Botti last term, running second in the Duke Of Cambridge before winning the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes at Sandown Park.

“We offered her in this sale so that she would be stand out,” said Tony Nerses. “I am delighted that she has been bought by Newsells, she couldn’t have gone to a better farm. It is sad to see her go – to have bred a filly of her calibre from a homebred pedigree is quite something. She will be difficult to replace, but we will have to find another like her now!”

Aljazzi is the first foal out of Nouriya, a half-sister to the Listed-placed Lady Nouf, also a member of the Blue Diamond band, and Balmoral Handicap winner Yuften, who also finished second past the post in the Prix Jean Prat.

Nouriya has a two-year-old filly by Australia in training with Roger Charlton, a yearling filly by Frankel and a colt foal by Golden Horn.

She visited our multiple Group 1 winner Decorated Knight this year.
