Jousi pulls clear for an impressive win

The regally bred Jousi got off the mark in impressive style on Friday when successful in the opening race of the King George meeting at Ascot.

The 6f fillies’ maiden in question is invariably a competitive race that has been won in the past by some smart sorts; judging by the pre-race chat, this year’s renewal was no exception with plenty of good words offered for a number of the runners.

They had no answer to Jousi, however.

The Hugo Palmer-trained filly had evidently learnt plenty from her encouraging debut at Newmarket’s July meeting and was always travelling comfortably in the hands of Josephine Gordon. One by one, her rivals came to challenge but the Dubawi filly had plenty in reserve to pull clear for a resounding success.

“Jousi was very unlucky at Newmarket first time out as she got stopped in her run,” said Gordon, alluding to her debut fourth behind Poetic Charm. “She’s as tough as nails.”

By Dubawi, homebred Jousi is the second foal out of the Galileo mare Soon, a tough filly who was trained by Aidan O’Brien to win the Listed Vincent O’Brien Ruby Stakes and run placed in the Group 3 Gallinule Stakes and Group 3 Noblesse Stakes.

In turn, Soon is out of Classic Park, Aidan O’Brien’s first Classic winner when successful in the 1997 Irish 1,000 Guineas, and a half-sister to Derby runner-up and popular sire Walk In The Park.

Further back, it is the family of Sussex Stakes winner Court Masterpiece.

Soon joined Blue Diamond Stud in 2013 when purchased by Tony Nerses for 800,000gns. Her first foal, an Oasis Dream filly named Nadia Glory, is also in training with Hugo Palmer.

The mare also has a yearling sister to Jousi and a yearling filly by Lope De Vega.

She visited Fastnet Rock this season.

Jousi’s win kicked off an an excellent day for Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, who later celebrated a brave win by The Grand Visir at Newmarket.
