Mr Khalid made a winning return on Monday

A long layoff proved no barrier for our homebred Mr Khalid, who made a winning return at Windsor on Monday following a 558-day absence.

The son of Pour Moi looked like a good horse when winning his second start as a two-year-old at Nottingham by seven lengths. As a result, he went into winter quarters as a lively Classic prospect but sadly didn’t make it back to the races last year.

Mr Khalid, who was making his debut for Roger Charlton at Windsor, travelled strongly in the hands of Kieran Shoemark before holding off Jack Of Diamonds to win by a neck.

“He’s probably done it easier than it looked,” said Kieran Shoemark. “We went a nice gallop and I was relieved as it allowed him to drop his head. I landed in front a bit soon but when I got after him again, he picked up again. To ride horses like this and for owners like this is a real privilege.”

Island Dreams is set to visit Fastnet Rock this year

Roger Charlton added: “He hasn’t run for a long time and the ground might be as quick as he wants it. He’s still very inexperienced.”

Mr Khalid is one of two winners from as many runners out of Island Dreams following Who’sthedude, currently an useful performer in Hong Kong. Island Dreams is a half-sister to the Group 2-winning miler Rob Roy and out of a placed half-sister to Grade 1 winner Super Staff.

The daughter of Giant’s Causeway, who was purchased by Tony Nerses while carrying Mr Khalid, has a two-year-old filly by Oasis Dream, a yearling colt by Mastercraftsman and a filly foal by Kodiac. She visits Fastnet Rock this year.
